Sleep apnea is a chronic condition where people go through multiple periods where they stop breathing while asleep. The complications of sleep apnea can be severe. First of all, people will wake up several times throughout the night but not remember it. This leads to excessive fatigue the following morning.
We offer Nightlase treatment using the Fotona laser to reduce snoring, which is a very unique procedure offered only by a few dentists. At the Julian Center for Comprehensive Dentistry we have several methods of treating your sleep apnea and getting it under control.
A MAA is a mandibular advancement appliance to keep your lower jawbone in place. We use a Pharyngometer device to determine the proper position of an MAA sleep appliance. Every individual is different and a one-size-fits-all approach to dental appliances doesn’t work. Tongue retaining devices can also be worn to prevent the tongue from slipping during sleep. Homeoblocks are devices that look like retainers, but they work differently than MAA. Homeoblocks stimulate the bones of the face to grow and expand, which takes time, but can ultimately help treat sleep apnea.
At the Julian Center for Comprehensive Dentistry, we understand that most people are familiar with CPAP devices. CPAP machines are considered the most effective tool in treating sleep apnea, but they have many problems. The first is that they can make going to sleep very difficult. It’s not easy going to sleep with a plastic mask over your face.
They also have several side effects. Due to air being pushed down your throat and mouth, you might suffer from a dry nose, dry throat, and nosebleeds. We also treat the cause of sleep apnea, including nasal obstruction and narrow arches, rather than just the symptoms. A CPAP and MAA only treat the symptoms. 3D expansion treats the underlying causation.
