Have any missing teeth? At the Julian Center for Comprehensive Dentistry in Ellicott City, MD, we have noticed that people are keener on replacing missing front teeth. On the other hand, they might postpone or completely neglect, replacing hind teeth. That’s not always the best thing to do.
People think that as long as the missing tooth doesn’t affect their smile, it won’t need to be replaced. Teeth position themselves based on how much space they have. When a tooth is lost, they realize they have more room and can start to shift. This leads to gaps between teeth and causes problems. At the Julian Center for Comprehensive Dentistry, we offer restorative procedures like dental bridges.
Dental bridges are very effective at replacing missing teeth. They were considered the best option we had until dental implants came along. The concept of a dental bridge is simple. You fill the missing gap by placing an artificial tooth, but the artificial tooth needs to attach to something. In a bridge, we attach it to the adjacent teeth as long as they’re healthy.
It’s simple and effective. We model dental bridges so that they look like the rest of your teeth. Bridges are permanent, so you won’t have to remove and clean them at the end of the day.
If dental bridges were perfect, there wouldn’t have been a need to come up with an alternative like implants. The main issue with bridges is that the adjacent teeth need to be cut down slightly so crowns can be placed onto them. This takes away from perfectly healthy teeth. In the long run, if these teeth start to decay, the bridge will lose its integrity.
An implant relies on placing a screw into the jawbone then placing the artificial tooth onto the screw. The surrounding teeth aren’t even touched or involved. Dental implants are considered more durable and can last a lifetime if taken care of properly.
We provide both options here at the Julian Center for Comprehensive Dentistry, and the decision is yours.
